Popular Ethiopian activist Andargachew Tsige, who was imprisoned in 2014 and placed on death row, is officially a free man.
Andargachew, 63, also a British citizen, was arrested in Yemen during a stopover. He was released Tuesday along with 575 other prisoners who were pardoned by the Ethiopian government under “unique circumstances,” according to the state-affiliated Fana Broadcasting Corporate (FBC).

“I’m overwhelmed. I never expected to receive such an ecstatic reception by so many Ethiopians,” he said after he was driven to his parent’s residence in Addis Ababa.

“Four years isn’t that much of sacrifice, we have seen worse, I don’t know what to say right now. we will talk when the time is right, not in front of those who arrested me. Now is the time to see my father,” he added.
