President of the West African Boxing Union (WABU), Mr. Remi Aboderin, has commended GOtv for introducing GOtv Boxing Night Mini, a smaller version of the popular GOtv Boxing Night. Speaking in Lagos on Sunday, Aboderin, who is also the Secretary-General of the Nigerian Boxing Board of Control (NBB of C), said GOtv Boxing Night Mini has the potential to take the sport to the next level.
The WABU President stated that GOtv Boxing Night Mini, which is conceived to hold more regularly, will offer many more Nigerian boxers the opportunity for fights that will help boost their fight records that will enhance their chances of being ranked for titles by international boxing bodies. He explained that the infrequency of boxing promotions locally has reduced the chances of boxers getting fights, thereby robbing them of the opportunity to have the number of fights required to take shots at continental, Commonwealth and world titles.
“It is undisputable that GOtv Boxing Night is the most regular platform on which our professional boxers get to fight because it holds every three months or thereabouts. There are other promotions, but they’re not of the same regularity, meaning that it is one for which most boxers aim. But with GOtv Boxing Night Mini, additional fight opportunities have been presented and many more boxers can benefit,” he said.
The inaugural edition of GOtv Boxing Night Mini will hold on 16 November at the Rowe Park Sports Complex in Lagos. It will feature big-name boxers such as Rilwan “Real One” Oladosu, WABU lightweight champion; Rilwan “Baby Face” Babatunde, WABU welterweight champion; Waidi “Skoro” Usman, former African Boxing Union featherweight champion and Kabiru “KB Godson Towolawi.
The WABU boss noted that Ghanaian boxers, who usually have higher number of fights than their Nigerian counterparts of the same age and profile, have been benefiting from the regularity of promotions in their country.
He noted that the sponsors deserve commendation for introducing GOtv Boxing Night Mini, which increases their support for boxing in Nigeria.
“They have been spending a lot of money on GOtv Boxing Night and GOtv Boxing NextGen Search and have added GOtv Boxing Night Mini. They are probably the biggest supporters of the sport in Africa. I want to use this opportunity to call on other corporate bodies to join GOtv in their bid to move Nigerian boxing to higher heights,” he said.
League leaders, Liverpool will be aiming to consolidate their winning streak and compound struggling Manchester United and Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s woes when they travel to Old Trafford for the 9th round of Premier League football on Sunday, October 20.
The Merseyside outfit has taken an early lead in the league, leaving other teams to play catch up after establishing an 8-point gap on its closest rival, Manchester City, with just eight games played. Liverpool will equal Manchester City’s record of 18 successive league wins if they win at Old Trafford, but the Reds will be aware of their record of not winning at their longtime rival’s ground since 2014.
In contrast, Manchester United have struggled to find a rhythm since the new football season started despite recording an emphatic 4-0 victory over Chelsea in the opening game of the season, picking up only six points in the last seven games. The Red Devils will dread facing league leaders Liverpool while missing their talismanic goalkeeper, David Degea, who has been confirmed doubtful for the game by embattled coach, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.
In the other matches to be played at the weekend, Manchester City will hope to close the gap on Liverpool as they travel to high flying Crystal Palace on Saturday, while Chelsea will attempt to take a spot in the top four as they host Newcastle United at Stamford Bridge.
Third-placed Arsenal are not in action until Monday when they travel to Sheffield United to complete the 9th round of games.
Other Premier League fixtures include Leicester vs Burnley, Tottenham vs Watford, and Everton vs Watford.

The match between Tottenham Hotspur and Watford at the White Heart Lane will air live on SuperSport Select 2 at 3pm. Spurs are currently besieged by crisis after losing two of their last five Premier League matches, as well being defeated in their recent League Cup and UEFA Champions League fixture. The return of Enrique Sánchez Flores does not seem to have improved the fortune of the Honets
The pick of the LaLiga games is the encounter between Eibar and defending champions, Barcelona. The game, which kicks off at 12pm on Saturday will be live on SuperSport Select 4. Eibar, who have the third best defense in the LaLiga, will aim to lengthen their unbeaten run from four to five games when they host Ernesto Valverde’s men at the Estadio Municipal de Ipurua. The Catalans, who started their title defense in sloppy form, will be aiming for a win to enable them topple leaders, Real Madrid, who are only two points better.
Also on Saturday, Atletico Madrid will host Valencia in their ninth game of the season at the Wanda Metropolitano in the Spanish capital. The match will air live at 3pm on SuperSport Select 4.
The day’s schedule will be rounded off with the broadcast of the match between Mallorca and Real Madrid on SuperSport Select 4 at 8pm. Real have shaken off their indifferent early season form and currently top the table in Spain.
In the Serie A, defending champions, Juventus, will seek to widen their advantage over Inter Milan when they host Bologna at Juventus Stadium in Turin. The match will be live on SuperSport Select 5 at 7:45pm. In their last match, the defending Serie A champions defeated their major rivals Inter Milan 2-1 away from home to seize the leadership of the league from Antonio Conte’s team.

The introduction of GOtv Boxing Night Mini, which debuts on 16 November at the Rowe Park Sports Complex, Lagos, has sparked excitement among boxers. The decision to introduce GOtv Boxing Night Mini was announced on Monday by the organisers, Flykite Productions.
According to the organisers, GOtv Boxing Night Mini, which will hold more frequently at various venues, will give boxers more opportunities to fight and build their fight profiles to increase their eligibility for international titles.
Speaking in separate interviews, boxers commended the sponsors for increasing the opportunities to fight, saying many talented ones seeking avenues will benefit from GOtv Boxing Night Mini.
Kamaru “Slow Poison” Aremu, a boxer yet to make his professional bow, said he believes that his chances of getting an opportunity to fight have been boosted with the introduction of GOtv Boxing Night Mini.
“I like GOtv Boxing Night and I have tried to be on the bill a few times, but I have not succeeded. With GOtv Boxing Night Mini, which will hold more regularly than the big ones, I believe that boxers in my shoes will have opportunities to fight and also feature at the main event,” he said.
A similar sentiment was expressed by Sikiru “Omo Iya Eleja” Shogbesan, who has had one fight at GOtv Boxing Night, but is seeking more to boost his fight profile.
According to him, the competition for spots on the bill at the main event is stiff, making it tough to be selected.
“GOtv are about the only serious sponsors of boxing in Nigeria. It means getting to fight at the main event is tough. But with the mini edition, boxers stand to have more opportunities, as GOtv Boxing Night Mini will hold more frequently,” he said excitedly.
Rilwan “Real One” Oladosu, West African Boxing Union (WABU) lightweight champion, who is billed to fight at the maiden edition, said the tournament will provide him an opportunity to keep in shape for the African Boxing Union lightweight title bout against incumbent champion, Oto “Joe Boy” Joseph, in December. Both boxers were billed to clash for the title at GOtv Boxing Night 20. The bout had to be postponed, following a shoulder injury suffered by Joe Boy.
Aside from Oladosu, boxers scheduled to fight at the maiden edition of GOtv Boxing Night Mini are Rilwan “Baby Face” Babatunde, West African Boxing Union (WABU) welterweight champion; Waheed “Skoro” Usman, former African Boxing Union (ABU) featherweight champion; Kabiru “KB Godson” Towolawi and Opeyemi “Sense” Adeyemi.
Babatunde, a graduate of GOtv Boxing NextGen Search, thanked the sponsors for the initiative, saying the tournament will help keep boxers in good shape.
Viewers on DStv and GOtv will need to gear up for a thrilling week of football action, as we bring you the ‘Beautiful Game’ from the Premier League, La Liga and Serie A.
The pick of Premier League matches this weekend is definitely the meeting of Manchester United and Liverpool at Old Trafford on Sunday evening. The Red Devils went into the international break on the back of a dispiriting 1-0 loss away to Newcastle United – a new low for a club which has been on the decline for years.
By contrast, Liverpool beat Leicester City 2-1 at home in their last outing to make it eight wins from as many matches and open up an eight-point lead at the top of the log over champions Manchester City.
Jurgen Klopp’s team will also have the all-time Premier League record for consecutive wins in their sights: the Reds have racked up 17 straight victories from last season into this, and equalling Manchester City’s record of 18 at the home of their hated rivals the Red Devils will be the sweetest achievement for the Merseyside club.
DStv subscribers from Premium to Family will have font row seats to all La Liga games, while on GOtv, Max is the home of the Spanish league and all the best games will be available on the package, while Plus customers can tune in twice a week for selected matches.
The pick of La Liga games for this round comes from Estadio Wanda Metropolitano on Saturday afternoon, when Atletico Madrid host Valencia. The Rojiblancos have won just once in their last five league outings, playing out a goalless draw with Real Valladolid before the international break to sit in third place on the log, three points adrift of leaders Real Madrid.
Valencia, meanwhile, are unbeaten in their last four La Liga outings and claimed back-to-back wins over Athletic Bilbao and Deportivo Alaves before the international break, moving them up to eighth spot and within striking distance of the Champions League berths.
DStv Family customers have a boosted offering of Serie A and will see all the matches, while Access customers will be able to catch two games a week. GOtv Max and GOtv Plus customers will enjoy our coverage of the best action from Italy.
The headline match from Serie A this weekend is the opening clash between Lazio and Atalanta from Stadio Olimpico. Le Aquile have struggled for consistency in the league thus far, with a 2-2 draw away to Bologna in which they twice had to come from behind to salvage a point summing up the difficulties of their campaign thus far. Lazio, nonetheless, have risen to sixth spot and are optimistic of further improvement.
Atalanta, meanwhile, have really hit their stride in Serie A. A 3-1 home win over Lecce extended their unbeaten run to five matches, a sequence of results in which they have claimed 13 points from a possible 15 to rise into third place behind the leading duo of Juventus and Internazionale. Le Dea will hope to continue their momentum with a win in Rome and lay down a marker as potential title hopefuls.

A mini version of the hugely successful GOtv Boxing Night, tagged GOtv Boxing Night Mini, is set to start. The inaugural edition will hold on 16 November at the Rowe Park, Yaba, Lagos. This was announced yesterday by the organisers, Flykite Productions, at a media sit-in in Lagos.
Jenkins Alumona, CEO Flykite, explained that GOtv Boxing Night Mini is conceived to provide more frequent opportunities for boxers as a means of ensuring that they get requisite number of fights to make them eligible for sub-regional, continental and international title bouts.
“Our boxers have, despite the best efforts of GOtv Boxing Night, inadequate opportunities to fight and build their fight records, which they need to become eligible for international titles. GOtv Boxing Night Mini, which will be staged with more frequency than the main event, will address this challenge,” he said.
Alumona also explained that the 20th edition of GOtv Boxing Night, which was planned to hold last Saturday, has been fused into the mega edition of the event slated for December. The development, he said, was imposed by the injury suffered in training by Oto “Joe Boy” Joseph, African Boxing Union (ABU) lightweight champion, who was scheduled to defend his title against Rilwan “Real One” Oladosu, West African Boxing Union (WABU) champion in the much-anticipated headline bout.
He added that hopes that the injury would heal on time proved misplaced, as sports medicine experts advised that the injury-a shoulder breach-be allowed a longer recuperation period to avoid aggravation.
Some of the other boxers slated to fight at GOtv Boxing Night 20 will, however, feature at GOtv Boxing Night Mini. These include Rilwan “Baby Face” Babatunde, Kabiru “KB Godson” Towolawi and Cynthia “Baby Girl” Ogunsemilore. Also lined up to be in action is Waheed “Skoro” Usman, former ABU featherweight champion.
Viewers on DStv and GOtv who have been enjoying unrivalled coverage of the 2019 IAAF World Championship, can look forward to more great Athletics action.
The next major running event on the calendar is the Bank of America Chicago Marathon, which will be held on Sunday 13 October 2019 in ‘Chi-Town’ and will be broadcast LIVE on SuperSport 8/SuperSport 9/SuperSport 10, Maximo 2 and Select 1.
While the event will not feature Kenyan running star Eliud Kipchoge (a former champion of the Chicago Marathon, who will be participating in the INEOS 1:59 Challenge in Vienna this week), there will nonetheless be major African participation.
The men’s elite field for SuperSport viewers to enjoy includes 2015 Chicago Marathon champion, Dickson Chumba (Kenya), 2019 Boston Marathon champion Lawrence Cherono (Kenya) and the fastest man to ever debut in the marathon in 2:03:34, Getaneh Molla (Ethiopia).
This trio will look to get the better of defending Chicago Marathon champion Mo Farah of Britain (also a four-time Olympic gold medalist) and United States favourite Galen Rupp, the 2016 Olympic marathon bronze medalist and 2017 Chicago Marathon champion.
In the women’s elite field, 2018 Chicago Marathon champion Brigid Kosgei (Kenya) will look to defend her title. The main threats to her ambition will come from American marathon debut record holder Jordan Hasay and 2018 Paris Marathon champion Betsy Saina, as well as 2018 US marathon champion Emma Bates, Mexican national record holder Madai Perez and three-time Olympian Lisa Weightman.

UEFA Euro 2020 Qualifiers Live on GOtv
GOtv viewers can look forward to the resumption of qualifying action for the UEFA Euro 2020 tournament, with Matchday 7 and 8 fixtures from Thursday, 10th October till Tuesday, 15th October 2019.
Qualifiers for Euro 2020 get back underway on Thursday, with several major teams in action. Group I opponents, Russia and Scotland are set to battle for three crucial points in a match scheduled to hold October 10th at 7:45pm on SuperSport Select 4.
France, current World Cup holders and two-time European champions, will travel to Iceland for a Group H qualifier on Friday, which will be aired 7:45pm on SuperSport Select 4. France, who have won three qualifying matches in a row since their defeat to Turkey in June, have always found a way past Iceland. But with just four matches remaining, Les Blues are under increasing pressure from Iceland for one of the two automatic group tickets. Turkey currently lead the group, followed by France and Iceland.
Despite losing the reverse fixture back in March, Iceland will seek redemption in front of their fans in Raykjavik as a win bigger than the 0-4 loss suffered in the first leg would enhance their chance of picking one of the group’s two tickets based on the head-to-head rule.
On Saturday, Norway and Spain will go head-to-head in a Group F qualifier. It will be aired live at 7:45pm on SuperSport Select 4. In the seven games played between both countries, Spain have won five, with Norway winning only once. Norway are unbeaten in their last five matches but have only won two of those games, while Spain have won seven matches.
Other fixtures include Wales versus Croatia (showing on Sunday at 7:45 pm on SuperSport Select 4), Ukraine versus Portugal (showing on Monday at 7:45pm on SuperSport Select 4), and Sweden vs Spain (showing on Tuesday at 7:45pm on SuperSport Select 2).
