The 2026 World Cup will be held in the United States, Mexico and Canada after a landslide win.
A vote of Fifa’s member nations at the Congress in Moscow saw the “United Bid” beat Morocco by 134 votes to 65.
And US Soccer Federation President Carlos Cordeiro said: “This is an emotional day.
“Thank you so much for this incredible honour and entrusting us with the privilege of hosting the World Cup.”
England and the other Home Nations are all believed to have backed the winning bid, with all votes being made public by Fifa.
And it means the final of the first 48-team World Cup will be held at the MetLife Stadium in Rutherford New Jersey, 32 years after Pasadena’s Rose Bowl hosted the 1994 showpiece.
An FA Spokesperson: “We congratulate the USA, Canada and Mexico on winning the bid to host the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
“Both bids were of a very high quality and we welcome the fact that the bidding process was both open and transparent.
“We cast our vote for the United bid as we believe the independent technical assessment made its advantages very clear.
“However, it is important to note that both bids were deemed to have met the hosting requirements and a tournament in Morocco, close to Europe and in a country that loves football, had a great deal for English football fans to be excited about.
“We are confident that the USA, Canada and Mexico will put on a fantastic event and we look forward to the tournament in 2026.”
The decision to choose the North American bid was welcomed by Major League Soccer, who said: “The decision to host World Cup 2026 in Canada, Mexico and the United States is a testament to our three nations coming together for the United Bid, and a monumental step in our collective mission to further advance the game of soccer in North America.
“We congratulate all of those who worked tirelessly to bring the World Cup back to North America and thank the countries that voted for the United Bid, and for their belief in our vision for the future of the sport in our region.
“There is no doubt that World Cup 2026 will elevate the sport of soccer to entirely new levels and Major League Soccer is honored to be a part of this joyous day.”
The four bidding nations were prevented from voting, while Ghana did not turn up at Congress after their FA chief was suspended over corruption allegations.
At the last minute, Fifa agreed that three US territories – Guam, Puerto Rico and the US Virgin Isles – would also not be allowed to cast their ballots.
That meant 102 votes were required to win, a hurdle the “United Bid” cleared easily.
Before the vote, both bids had the chance to give a 15-minute presentation.
Canada’s Ghana-born teenage midfielder Alphonso Davies opened the United presentation, followed by Mexican FA chief Decio de Maria, who promised: “We will welcome you as brothers and sisters in football with open arms and open hearts.”
Morocco offered a video to showcase the country’s footballing heritage: “Rooted in Africa but only a few kilometres from Europe.”
But Fifa showed their colours as general secretary Fatima Samoura pointed to the Fifa evaluation reports into both bid which gave the JUnited bid a score of 4 out of five compared to Morocco’s 2.7.
Samoura said: “We are proud to present such a comprehensive and objective report. We hope the report helps the delegates in their final decision.”
Fifa have previously agreed how the 48 places will be allocated.
Europe will have 16 slots, up from 13 at this World Cup, with nine places for Africa (up from five in 2018).
Asia will have eight places, South America and Concacaf six each and Oceania will, for the first time, have a guaranteed slot.
The final two places will be decided by play-offs involving all confederations except Uefa.
Fifa have already declared 48 finalists will be split into 16 groups of three teams for the opening phase, with the top two going through to a last 32 knock-out round.
The United States will host 60 of the 80 games, with Mexico and Canada having 10 games each.
