The Deputy Governor of Kano State, Prof. Hafiz Abubakar, has resigned. The resignation notice was contained in a letter signed by the Deputy Governor and addressed to his boss, Governor Ibrahim Ganduje.
Abubakar said he would have loved to complete his tenure with Ganduje next year, but the prevailing circumstance would not allow.
Abubakar had been at loggerheads with Ganduje, with the Deputy Governor accusing the governor of funding a plot to overthrown him. He equally said he had been denied some of his rights, including official accommodation.
Responding to the allegations, Ganduje, through the State Commissioner for Information, Garba Muhammad, said the State Government does not need to spend money to remove Abubakar from office, describing his as being of no consequence politically.
Abubakar was also said to have been the architect of his not having an official residence as he opted to stay in his private house.
The state government also said the deputy governor was the one handling the funds for the construction of his official residence.
Abubakar’s letter of resignation was stamped received in Ganduje’s office on August 5, 2018. The expectation is that with his resignation, Abubakar will defect to the Peoples Democratic Party from the All Progressives Congress that provided the platform for his election with Ganduje in 2015. There has been no response from the Governor’s Office as at press time.
