The election of the Enugu State branch of the Nigerian Medical Association (NMA) on Thursday was inconclusive and bloody.
It was alleged that some doctors, from ESUT Park Lane, were denied voting because they did not pay their dues.
Some members of the association, who gathered at the Michael Okpara square for the Annual General Meeting (AGM) and the election of new executive of the association for the next two years, were seriously injured by over 30 thugs who invaded the venue, moved to the polling booths to make away with the ballot boxes.
The thugs came with dangerous weapons while voting was going on and started destroying chairs, tables and canopies being used for the election.
The thugs upturned the ballot boxes and pounced on members of the electoral committee, making the arena to be rowdy which led the doctors to run for their lives.
Some sustained injuries trying to escape from the thugs.
Some of the doctors, including the NMA chairman in the state, Dr Ike Okwesili, were beaten and wounded.
The policemen deployed to maintain peace at the venue had difficulty bringing the situation under control.
Recently, a faction of the Enugu state branch of NMA announced the suspension of the incumbent chairman, Dr. Ike Okwesili, for alleged gross misconduct and abuse of office.
They subsequently appointed one of the Deputy Vice-Chairmen, Enugu East, Dr Kinsley Ugwuonye, as acting chairman.
