The Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) has vowed to continue to inform and educate telecom consumers on their rights.
NCC also revealed that over 22.7 million subscribers have activated the Do-Not-Disturb (DND) code.

The DND Code (2442) is NCC’s shortcode to completely stop receiving telemarketing and other unsolicited text messages on customers’ phones.

The Executive Vice Chairman, Prof Umar Danbatata, who made this disclosure at ATCON Virtual Conference, stressed that the need to protect and empower telecom subscribers cannot be overemphasised.

This, according to him, is in furtherance of the commission’s mandate to protect the interests of consumers and support a robust telecommunications sector in Nigeria.

Danbatta also stated that NCC, in keeping with its mandates and the eight-Point Agenda, will continue to inform and educate telecom consumers on their rights, new developments in the sector and other emerging issues they need to know about.

The NCC boss said only 500,000 telecom subscribers activated the Do-Not-Disturb short code in the year 2015.

The commencement of the campaign saw the activation of the Do-Not-Disturb code grew to over 21 million, 21,704,061 to be precise in the year 2018.

While in the year 2019, the commission recorded 22,196,712 subscribers had activated the DND (2442) short code.

NCC, according to Danbatta, has continued to receive numerous complaints from subscribers, following dissatisfaction in services delivered.

Over 98% of the total service-related complaints received from telecoms consumers within a 15-month period, spanning January 2019 to April 2020, have been successfully resolved by NCC.

In addition, Danbatta also said that the other component of the campaign was to sensitise Nigerians to the existence of the NCC’s toll-free line, 622, which consumers could use to lodge complaints with regard to the quality of service and other related services.
