Billionaire businessman and current board Chairman of UBA Group Plc, Tony Elumelu, has been bestowed with the honorary distinction of Officer in the Order of Leopold by the Belgian Government. Meganews understands that the event took place on Sunday night in Brussels.
Sharing the news on Instagram earlier this morning, Elumelu said he is very humbled to be recognised and conferred with the honour. Do note that the “Officer in the Order of Leopold” is one of the prestigious and oldest national honours in the country’s history.
“Last night, the Kingdom of Belgium conferred on me with the honorary distinction of Officer in the Order of Leopold, the country’s oldest and most important National Honour.
“I am humbled by this recognition of the work at the Tony Elumelu Foundation in catalysing entrepreneurs across Africa and will continue to drive the economic empowerment of our brilliant young African entrepreneurs to propel development in Africa,” Elumelu shared, alongside pictures from the event.
As you may well know, Tony Elumelu is one of the most successful Nigerian businessmen in recent history. An Economics graduate from the Ambrose Ali University, Elumelu founded Standard Trust Bank in 1997. By 2005, he led the merger between Standard Trust Bank and United Bank for Africa, a very significant event in Nigeria’s corporate history.
He served as the Chief Executive Officer of United Bank for Africa for ten years after which he stepped down to serve as the company’s Chairman of the board of directors. He is also the Chairman of a number of other notable Nigerian companies, including Transcorp and Heirs Holding.
