The National Information Technology Development Agency (NITDA) and the Federal Capital Territory Universal Basic Education Board (FCT UBEB) are joining forces to enhance digital literacy among school children.
This partnership aims to equip students with essential skills for navigating an increasingly digital world.
The collaboration was announced during a recent meeting at NITDA’s headquarters in Abuja. Director General Kashifu Inuwa CCIE highlighted the strategic importance of the initiative.
Represented by Mr. Oladejo Olawumi, Director of the Information Technology Infrastructure Solutions (ITIS) department, Inuwa emphasized the alignment with NITDA’s Strategic Roadmap and Action Plan (SRAP 2.0) 2024-2027, focusing specifically on Digital Literacy and Talent Development.
He stressed the need to integrate technology into education to engage and empower young minds effectively.
As Inuwa rightly stated, “Today’s children, known as digital natives, effortlessly embrace technology. Unlike us, digital migrants, they seamlessly adapt to new gadgets and platforms. Embedding digital knowledge in their learning environment is crucial.”
He further discussed the “Digital Literacy for All” program, highlighting NITDA’s efforts to enhance educational infrastructure nationwide, including digital learning centers and resources.
This national initiative aims to extend digital education resources across Nigeria, enhancing digital literacy among students and out-of-school children alike.
Regarding emerging technologies, Inuwa referenced ongoing research and development in Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Robotics.
He mentioned a recent collaboration with the Abuja Enterprise Agency on a Robotics competition for secondary schools, aimed at fostering youth interest in Robotics and technology.
Inuwa emphasized NITDA’s ambitious goal of achieving 70% digital literacy in Nigeria by 2027, highlighting the integration of digital literacy into the national educational curriculum.
Additionally, he stressed the importance of providing hands-on experience with AI and Robotics to prepare students for future skill demands.
Addressing the needs of out-of-school children, Inuwa highlighted collaborative efforts with stakeholders to attract these children through programs integrating school feeding with digital literacy and educational training.
This holistic approach aims to equip children with essential digital skills for a more inclusive and technologically advanced future.
Dr. Alhassan Sule, Acting Executive Chairman of FCT UBEB, commended NITDA for its strategic initiatives to advance Nigeria’s digitally transformed economy.
According to him, the forthcoming FCT Basic Schools debate competition involving 900 students, with finalists participating in a reality house experience focused on AI and Robotics training, to be broadcasted live across multiple media platforms.
This collaboration between NITDA and FCT UBEB showcase their commitment to enhancing digital literacy and preparing Nigerian youth for the digital age.
