As part of the Renewed Hope Initiative (RHI) social investment program, Nigeria’s First Lady and RHI Chairperson, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, has commissioned another ICT Community Centre in collaboration with the National Information Technology Development Agency (NITDA).
The centre is located at the Kwara State College of Education in Ilorin, the Kwara State capital.
At the lively commissioning event, Senator Tinubu praised NITDA for its efforts in narrowing the digital divide across Nigeria.
She remarked, “So far, NITDA has constructed four Community ICT Centres in partnership with RHI. This is the second to be commissioned, with centres in Benue and Oyo ready for inauguration soon.”
Additionally, she highlighted that Digital Economy Centres have been fully equipped in Jigawa, Ebonyi, Cross River, Niger, and the Federal Capital Territory.
She also announced plans for 10 more centres in states including Lagos, Kano, and Abia, among others.
The First Lady emphasized the transformative power of ICT, particularly for women and girls.
“These centres empower women and girls by breaking traditional barriers and opening new opportunities. With ICT skills, they can enhance education, achieve self-reliance, and contribute to the global economy while supporting their families,” she stated.
Senator Tinubu urged the community to take ownership of the facilities, stressing that their success depends on active participation.
Kwara State Governor, Mallam AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq, also commended the initiative, describing it as an impactful investment in the future of Nigerian youths.
“Technology is here to stay, and the only way forward is to invest aggressively in skills and infrastructure for a prosperous future,” he noted.
In his remarks, NITDA Director General Kashifu Inuwa CCIE highlighted the project’s alignment with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s vision of leveraging digital innovation to drive national prosperity.
“This centre is designed to deliver smart, interactive, and personalized learning experiences. It reflects the President’s commitment to elevating Nigeria in the global digital economy,” he said.
The centre, equipped with 48 computers, e-learning tools, internet connectivity, and alternative power, is part of NITDA’s “Digital Literacy for All” initiative.
“Nigeria’s greatest resource is not its minerals but its people. This is how we can achieve sustained, inclusive growth as a nation,” Inuwa added.
The event was attended by dignitaries including Imo State Governor Hope Uzodinma, the wife of the Vice President, Hajiya Nana Shettima, and several governors’ wives, alongside other top government officials.
This commissioning marks a pivotal step in equipping communities with the tools needed to thrive in a digital economy, reaffirming the government’s commitment to inclusive growth and empowerment.
