The Minister of State for Petroleum Resources (Gas), Ekperikpe Ekpo, has concluded plans to meet with regulatory agencies and producers of Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG) to tackle the recent surge in cooking gas prices across the country.
Ekpo made the disclosure during the launch of the LPG Grassroots Penetration and Cylinder Distribution Programme for the South-West Zone held in Lagos on Monday.
The initiative, implemented by the Decade of Gas Secretariat in collaboration with private partners, saw the distribution of 250 fully-filled LPG cylinders to underserved households in Lagos.
It forms part of the Federal Government’s broader plan to transition 250,000 homes annually to clean cooking gas by 2030 across all 774 local government areas in Nigeria.
Addressing journalists at the event, the minister acknowledged the sharp increase in LPG prices, noting that a 12.5-kilogram cylinder now sells for about ₦16,200, up from ₦13,500 the previous month.
He said: “I just received the information this morning that the price of gas has gone up again.
“I will invite the regulators and producers to a meeting to discuss the issue. Our goal is to ensure that gas prices come down and remain affordable.
“Energy security is about both affordability and availability, and we intend to address whatever factors are driving this increase.”
The minister reaffirmed the government’s commitment to promoting gas as a sustainable and accessible energy source for Nigerian households.
