Fuel Tanker Explosion in Niger Leaves 30 Dead, 40 Injured

At least 30 people were confirmed dead  and 40 others injured in a fuel tanker explosion in Niger State on Tuesday.

Eyewitnesses told journalists the victims were scooping fuel from a fallen tanker when the explosion occurred at about 11:00 a.m. at Essan and Badeggi communities  in Katcha Local Government Area of the state.

Many victims were burnt beyond recognition, while the injured were treated at nearby hospitals in the area.

The Chairman of the Niger State Tanker Drivers Association,  Farouk Kawo, expressed sadness at the incident.

He recalled that more than 30 tanker accidents had been recorded on the route this month.
