Members of the Islamic Movement (IM), led by Sheikh Ibraheem Yaqoub El-Zakzaky, on Saturday, took to major streets in Kano metropolis to stage a protest against US President Donald Trump’s planned military intervention in Nigeria following allegations of Christian genocide in the country.
The protesters who were mainly members of the Shi’a Islamic movement founded by Zakzaky who wielded various placards with inscriptions such as “We condemn Trump’s threat to attack Nigeria,” “There is no Christian genocide in Nigeria,” and “America wants to control our resources,” told journalists that their protest was to counter Trump’s claim of Christian genocide in Nigeria.
One of the leaders of the protesting group explained that Trump was being fed with lies by some Christian leaders in the country, adding that the US President’s main aim was to subtly control Nigeria’s resources.
The protest was as a result of Trump’s recently redesignation of Nigeria as a ‘Country of Particular Concern’ and a vow to send in US troops to take out extremists over alleged persecution of Christians in the country.
Trump who announced the redesignation of Nigeria as a CPC country in a post on social media last week, had gone further by saying he had ordered the US Defense Department to prepare for a “possible military action in Nigeria” over the killing of Christians in the country if the Nigerian government fails to address the killing of Christians.
Though the Nigerian government has continued to deny the alleged Christian genocide, describing it as false, the threat of a military intervention by the US still remains ominous.
