A passenger train en route from Itakpe to Warri derailed on Saturday in Kogi State, leaving travelers stranded for several hours before being rescued by security personnel.
CSP William Ovye-Aya, the Police Public Relations Officer for Kogi Command, confirmed the incident to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Sunday in Lokoja, noting that the derailment occurred around 4:30 p.m. in Adogo community, Ajaokuta Local Government Area.
According to Ovye-Aya, the Commissioner of Police, CP Naziru Kankarofi, promptly responded to a distress call and dispatched officers to provide security and support for the affected passengers.
“The CP personally visited the Adogo derailment site on Sunday to conduct an on-the-spot assessment. He met with officials of the Nigerian Railway Corporation and the stranded passengers. He also directed the deployment of additional security personnel to safeguard the people and facilities,” Ovye-Aya stated.
The police spokesperson confirmed that all passengers were safely evacuated to Ajaokuta station and later assisted in continuing their journeys to their respective destinations, with no casualties reported.
Ovye-Aya added that the Commissioner reiterated the Command’s commitment to collaborating with other security agencies to ensure the safety of lives and property across Kogi State.
