Former Abia State Governor and Senator representing Abia North, Orji Uzor Kalu, has confirmed that there were indeed attempts by some lawmakers to unseat Senate President Godswill Akpabio.
However, he said the plot failed after senior members of the National Assembly intervened to maintain stability and unity within the chamber.
Speaking with journalists at the National Assembly on Tuesday, Kalu described the Senate as “one big family” committed to avoiding internal crises that could distract it from its legislative duties.
“Though there were attempts, we didn’t allow that to happen. That is why I always say we are one big family, and it is not going to happen,” Kalu said.
He emphasized that the Senate’s focus remained on supporting President Bola Tinubu’s administration in tackling economic challenges and enacting laws that improve the living standards of Nigerians.
“Whatever the problem is, the Senate is more interested in making laws that will help President Tinubu overcome the economic difficulties our people are going through. We are more interested in the people. The legislation we are making is pro-people, and we are focused on ensuring Nigerians can eat three times a day,” he added.
Kalu’s comments come nearly a year after the Senate unanimously passed a vote of confidence in Akpabio to quell rumours of a planned impeachment. In October 2024, Senator Yahaya Abdullahi (Kebbi North) had dismissed reports that northern lawmakers were plotting to remove the Senate President, calling such claims divisive and harmful to the nation’s democracy.
Similarly, in March 2025, during controversy surrounding a sexual harassment allegation by Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan, senators again passed a unanimous vote of confidence in Akpabio, reaffirming their support for his leadership.
Kalu’s latest remarks appear intended to project an image of unity within the Red Chamber amid growing political realignments ahead of the 2027 general election.
