Former President Olusegun Obasanjo has advised Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde to remain steadfast in his developmental agenda despite public criticism, saying that true leadership often earns recognition only after initial opposition.
Obasanjo gave the advice on Wednesday while joining the governor to inaugurate the Ibadan Central Bus Terminal at Iwo Road. The new facility features two mega bus stations, waiting areas, ticketing offices, eateries, restrooms, open parking spaces, power and water supply units, elevators, and escalators.
Describing Makinde as an Omoluabi, a person of good character, Obasanjo commended the governor for transforming Ibadan into a more livable city through people-oriented infrastructure. He noted that the network of bus terminals at Ojoo, Challenge, and Iwo Road would significantly improve transportation and commerce across Oyo State and the South-West region.
“Those abusing you today will praise you tomorrow. I was also criticised when I was in office, but the same people now commend me. That is the nature of leadership,” Obasanjo said.
He lauded Makinde’s achievements, adding that as an engineer, the governor understands how to fix systems efficiently. “You are doing well, and you have added political engineering to your professional skills. That’s commendable,” he remarked.
Obasanjo also urged residents and transport users to maintain the facility, stressing that sustainable infrastructure requires public responsibility.
Governor Makinde, in his remarks, said the completion of the Ibadan Central Bus Terminal marks the fulfilment of his administration’s plan to establish four modern transport hubs in the city at Challenge, Ojoo, New Ife Road, and Iwo Road.
He said the project reflects his government’s focus on practical development rather than publicity-driven politics. “While others blow their trumpets, we’ve been quietly delivering on our promises,” Makinde stated.
He explained that although the project faced delays due to the COVID-19 pandemic and supply challenges, its completion demonstrates the administration’s commitment to keeping its word.
“With this commissioning, Ibadan now has four modern terminals. The next administration will continue this model in Ogbomoso, Saki, Iseyin, Ibarapa, and Oyo,” Makinde said, adding that the initiative aims to make transportation safer, faster, and more efficient for residents.
