He announced his withdrawal from the race during the inauguration of Alubarika House, his political movement’s secretariat in Osogbo on Saturday
The former Senate spokesman said he took the step after consultations with stakeholders in the state and beyond.
Basiru said: “Considering the enormous responsibilities of my current office as National Secretary of our great party and after due consultations with our esteemed leaders and stakeholders, particularly, the Leader of our party and President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, it has become necessary to emphatically state that I shall not be contesting the 2026 Osun State governorship election.”
Following Basiru’s withdrawal, 13 aspirants are now left to vie for the APC ticket in the December governorship primary in Osogbo.
They include the former Osun State Deputy Governor, Iyiola Omisore, the ex-
Managing Director of the National Inland Waterways Authority, Mr. Bola Oyebamiji; former Senate Committee chairman on Rules and Business, Senator Babajide Omoworare, former Osun Deputy Governor, Benedict Alabi and the Chairman, Mutual Assurance Benefits, Akin Ogunbiyi.
