Apple is preparing to take another major leap in digital identity, announcing plans to allow iPhones to function as full passport replacements by the end of 2025.
The move marks one of the company’s most ambitious expansions into government-grade identification and could reshape how millions of people travel.
According to early details shared with regulators and partner governments, the feature will live inside the Apple Wallet app, building on the digital driver’s licenses and national IDs already supported in select regions.
But unlike existing ID integrations, the passport system is being developed to meet stringent international travel standards, ensuring it can be verified at airports, land borders, and immigration desks worldwide.
“With the launch of Digital ID, we’re excited to expand the ways users can store and present their identity — all with the security and privacy built into iPhone and Apple Watch,” Jennifer Bailey, Apple’s vice president of Apple Pay and Apple Wallet, said in a statement.
“Since introducing the ability to add a driver’s license or state ID to Apple Wallet in 2022, we’ve seen how much users love having their ID right on their devices. Digital IDs brings this secure and convenient option to even more users across the country, as they can now add an ID to Wallet using information from their U.S. passport.”
Apple is working closely with the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO), the United States, the EU, the UK, and a handful of early-adopting countries to ensure global compatibility. The company is reportedly targeting a phased rollout, beginning with select travel corridors before scaling to broader international use.
