Former Labour Party presidential candidate in the 2023 elections, Peter Obi, has criticised the distribution of campaign vehicles ahead of the 2027 polls, describing the move as insensitive and a betrayal of public trust.
In a post on his verified X account on Thursday, Obi faulted the government’s decision to allocate scarce public resources to luxury vehicles such as Hilux trucks and Hummer buses for campaign mobilisation. He argued that such actions represent a moral failure at a time when Nigerians are grappling with hunger, unemployment, and insecurity.
The former Anambra State governor lamented that while ordinary citizens face poverty and despair, political leaders continue to flaunt wealth by driving brand-new vehicles, turning the people’s suffering into mere backdrops for political theatrics.
Obi stressed that true leadership should prioritise feeding the hungry, providing healthcare for the sick, creating opportunities for unemployed youth, and securing communities, rather than showcasing luxury cars or focusing on vote-seeking strategies.
“It is disheartening that, at a time when children are dropping out of school due to lack of tuition, mothers are dying in childbirth without basic medical supplies, and insecurity is tearing families apart, those in power choose to purchase and distribute luxury vehicles instead of addressing urgent needs,” he wrote.
He added that such actions do not reflect governance but rather insensitivity and abuse of trust disguised as political strategy. Obi urged a shift away from wastefulness and misplaced priorities, insisting that Nigeria needs leadership rooted in empathy, prudence, and accountability.
Despite current challenges, he reaffirmed his belief in the possibility of building a “New Nigeria” founded on responsible and people-centered governance.
