Former Attorney-General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Abubakar Malami, SAN, has rejected reports linking him to terrorism financing, describing the allegations as baseless, misleading, and politically driven.
In a statement issued Friday, Malami said his attention was drawn to a publication that mentioned his name alongside individuals described as terror suspects or alleged financiers. He dismissed the claims as “unfounded and unfair,” insisting they contradict his record in public office.
Malami stressed that he has never been accused, interrogated, or investigated by any security, law enforcement, or intelligence agency within or outside Nigeria for terrorism financing or related offences. He noted that even the retired military officer cited as the source in the report admitted he was not accusing him directly, but merely referenced vague “business” or “institutional” relationships involving certain suspects.
He criticised the framing of the publication, saying it misled the public and was manipulated by political opponents to create damaging insinuations. “Terrorism financing is a grave crime. Any attempt to associate an individual with such an offence must be based on verifiable facts and lawful findings, not speculation or guilt by association,” Malami stated.
Highlighting his record in office, Malami pointed to reforms he spearheaded, including the establishment of the Nigerian Financial Intelligence Unit as an independent body, the enactment of the Money Laundering (Prevention and Prohibition) Act, 2022, and the Terrorism (Prevention and Prohibition) Act, 2022. He said these measures strengthened Nigeria’s legal framework and contributed to the country’s removal from the Financial Action Task Force (FATF) grey list.
He added that broad engagement with individuals and institutions is a normal aspect of public service and should not be misconstrued as evidence of wrongdoing. Malami urged the media to act responsibly when reporting on national security issues, warning that careless publications could damage reputations and erode trust in state institutions.
Reaffirming his commitment to the rule of law and Nigeria’s international obligations, Malami said he reserves the right to seek legal redress against any publication that misrepresents his role in combating money laundering and terrorism financing.
