Aggrieved pensioners of the Federal Radio Corporation of Nigeria (FRCN), have said they will join other pensioners in a naked protest scheduled for Monday, December 8, to demand for the payment of their accrued arrears from the N32,000 minimum pension approved by the federal government.
The pensioners under the aeges of the Coalition of Federal Pensioners (CFP), during a press briefing in Lagos on Saturday, said they had mobilized members from all over the country to join the naked protest since the government had refused to heed its call for the payment of the arrears.
While speaking at the press conference, National Financial Secretary of the CFP, Bola Popoola, insisted that the planned protest can only be called off if the government does the needful between Saturday and Sunday.
Also speaking, National Chairman of the CFP, Mr. Mukaila Ogunbote, said the move is to press home their demand for payment of members’ outstanding pension increment arrears and palliative allowances.
He noted that the group had given the government a warning on Friday of their intention to stage the protest but that their threat was taken for granted and now, the FRCN pensioners within the Defined Benefit Scheme (DBS) and under the Coalition of Federal Pensioners of Nigeria, were left with no other option, but to be part of the protest.
“Our resolve to participate in the naked protest stems also from outright non-payment of the N25,000 palliative for six months, as approved since 2023 by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu,” Popoola said.
“Such is not flying with our colleagues in diaspora, which is the reason they have vowed to put their own naked protest on the international stage, wherever they are domiciled on Monday, December 8,” he said
He stressed that pensioners are in vulnerable status as they had dedicated productive years of their lives to service of their fatherland and are being subjected to street begging while many of them have died due to hunger and depression.
