President Bola Tinubu has called on Nigerians to take personal responsibility in combating misinformation and promoting truthful narratives about the country.
Speaking on Monday at the launch of “My Nigeria, My Responsibility”, a national reorientation campaign in Abuja, Tinubu, represented by Minister of Information and National Orientation Mohammed Idris, said Nigeria’s democratic stability and global reputation depend on citizens’ willingness to challenge falsehoods and highlight the nation’s progress.
He explained that the campaign is designed to strengthen civic consciousness and instill a shared sense of duty among Nigerians. According to him, patriotism must go beyond emotions and be demonstrated through everyday actions such as paying taxes, respecting institutions, and upholding national values.
“Your responsibility is to own our story: Be an ambassador of truth. In the digital age, do not weaponize misinformation. Highlight the progress, the innovation, the peace,” Tinubu said.
He further urged citizens to embody the Citizens’ Charter of National Values in their workplaces, communities, and online interactions.
“Your responsibility is to live our values: integrity, patriotism, diligence, tolerance, and excellence,” he added.
Tinubu also announced that the federal government will establish the National Media and Information Literacy Institute in February 2026. The institute, he said, will provide Nigerians with tools to verify information, resist online manipulation, and engage ethically in the public sphere.
