The Supreme Court on Friday upheld the death sentence imposed on Maryam Sanda, the daughter-in-law of a former National Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Mohammed Bello Haliru.
The Federal Capital Territory (FCT) High Court sentenced the woman to death on January 27, 2020, for stabbing to death the PDP chieftain’s son, Biliaminu Bello, during an argument in 2018.
She was one of the several inmates granted pardon by President Bola Tinubu’ we earlier this year.
The Federal Government later reversed the decision and reduced the sentence to 12 years following a public outcry.
In Friday’s proceeding a five-member panel of the apex court reinstated the original death sentence.
The Supreme Court dismissed Sanda’s appeal because she failed to show any error in the concurrent findings of the lower courts.
Justice Moore Adumein, who delivered the lead judgement, held that the prosecution proved the charge beyond reasonable doubt and that the Court of Appeal was right to uphold the conviction.
