The Movement for the Actualization of the Sovereign State of Biafra (MASSOB) has voiced its concern regarding the arrest of Dr. Chris Ngige, the former Minister of Labour and Employment, by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC). The group drew a direct line between the detention and Ngige’s recent reception of former Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi.
Obi had paid a visit to Ngige to offer sympathy after the former minister’s convoy was reportedly attacked, an incident that tragically resulted in one casualty.
In an official statement released and signed by MASSOB leader Comrade Uchenna Madu on Sunday, the organization suggested that Ngige’s arrest may be connected to the perception that he supports Obi’s anticipated 2027 presidential aspirations.
MASSOB used the opportunity to demand fair and impartial treatment in the nation’s governance, cautioning authorities against any actions that could be construed as politically motivated harassment. The group stressed that political leaders, including both Ngige and Obi, currently maintain their support for Nigeria’s unity and should therefore not be targets of undue persecution.
The group concluded with a call for fairness and respect for political figures: “MASSOB is concerned about the treatment of Dr. Chris Nwabueze Ngige and urges that all citizens, regardless of political affiliation, be treated fairly under the law. We call for respect for the dignity of all individuals while upholding national unity.”
