The governments of Lagos and Ogun States have issued a joint reassurance regarding the health of British-Nigerian heavyweight boxing icon, Anthony Joshua, confirming he is in stable condition following a tragic road accident on Monday.

The boxing champion was involved in a collision on the Lagos–Ibadan Expressway that resulted in two fatalities. However, official medical assessments indicate that Joshua and one other survivor are now out of immediate danger.

In a collaborative statement released on Monday, Gbenga Omotosho, the Lagos State Commissioner for Information, and Kayode Akinmade, Special Adviser on Information to the Ogun State Governor, provided clarity on the athlete’s status.

Following the crash, which occurred near the Sagamu Interchange, Joshua was moved across state lines to receive high-level clinical attention.

“Anthony Joshua and another passenger were immediately evacuated to a specialised facility in Lagos. Doctors have conducted several clinical assessments and have confirmed that both patients are stable and do not require any emergency interventions at this time,” the governments said.

The statement further highlighted a positive sign in his recovery, noting that “Anthony Joshua has since been relating well with his family.”

The accident took place shortly after 11:00 am at the Makun axis in Ogun State. Eyewitnesses reported that a Lexus SUV, which was transporting the boxer and three others, collided with a parked truck near the Danco Filling Station.

Confirming the casualties, the government representatives stated: “The vehicle conveying the team of four ran into a stationary truck, resulting in two fatalities.”

In the wake of the loss of life, the officials added: “We sympathise with the families of those involved in the accident, and pray that God will grant them the strength to go through this difficult time.”

Both state administrations have pledged to oversee the recovery process personally, ensuring that the survivors have access to the best resources available in the country.

“The governments of Ogun and Lagos are keenly monitoring the situation and will ensure that the two persons receive the best medical care,” the statement said.

While the news of his stability has brought relief to fans worldwide, the authorities have requested that the public allow the champion and his loved ones the space needed to process the trauma of the event.

“We appreciate the public’s concern and ask for privacy for Anthony Joshua and his family during this time,” the statement concluded.

Investigations into the specific cause of the crash, including the positioning of the stationary truck, are currently being conducted by relevant traffic and security agencies.
