The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has reiterated that former Kogi State Governor, Yahaya Bello, remains innocent until a court rules otherwise.
Appearing on Arise Television’s Morning Show on Monday, EFCC’s Director of Public Affairs, Wilson Uwuajeren, explained that Bello’s trial is still ongoing and only the judiciary has the authority to determine his guilt or innocence.
“It is not the Commission that is going to decide the matter. It’s the court that will decide the matter,” Uwuajeren said. “We are presenting witnesses, we have presented evidence… and at the end of the day, both the prosecution and the defense must get justice.”
He stressed that under the Nigerian Constitution, anyone facing trial is presumed innocent until proven guilty.
“Yahaya Bello, as we speak, is under trial, but the Constitution presumes that anyone who is under trial to be innocent until that case is proven,” he noted.
Uwuajeren also emphasized that Bello’s political standing has no bearing on the charges against him.
“Whatever is happening to him within his party, that is the party’s affairs. It has nothing to do with the EFCC. It has nothing to do with the charges we filed before the court,” he said.
He clarified that the EFCC is not involved in party politics, but is solely committed to pursuing justice through lawful prosecution.
“EFCC is not a political party. We are not interested in politics. EFCC is a law enforcement organization, and we are enforcing the law,” Uwuajeren reaffirmed.
According to him, nothing has gone wrong in the handling of the case, and the Commission remains focused on ensuring fairness for both sides.
