The Rivers State House of Assembly has commenced impeachment proceedings against Governor Siminalayi Fubara and his deputy, Prof. Ngozi Odu, accusing them of gross misconduct.
The process was initiated during plenary on Thursday, marking a new phase in the state’s deepening political crisis.
This impeachment move is widely seen as part of the prolonged power struggle between Fubara and former governor, now Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike. Analysts note that the battle is less about party ideology and more about control of political structures and influence in Nigeria’s oil-rich state.
Earlier in 2025, the Amaewhule-led Assembly, loyal to Wike, had served Fubara and his deputy a formal notice of misconduct under Section 188 of the 1999 Constitution, laying the groundwork for impeachment.
The crisis has significant implications for the 2027 elections. Some APC figures have already suggested that Fubara could seek re-election under their platform, despite ongoing hostilities and questions about agreements allegedly made between himself, Wike, and President Bola Tinubu.
