Super Eagles striker Victor Boniface has been ruled out for the remainder of the 2025/2026 season after being diagnosed with a serious knee injury, his club Werder Bremen have confirmed.
The Nigeria international has struggled with the issue since last summer, but continued playing until December, when the problem worsened and forced him to miss Bremen’s final two matches of the year.
Medical assessments later identified the injury as damage to the knee cartilage.
Boniface initially opted against immediate treatment, believing the condition would stabilise. However, by December, the cartilage damage had progressed to the point where he could no longer continue playing.
Following an initial diagnosis, the striker was advised to undergo surgery straight away.
He chose instead to seek a second opinion and travelled to Austria after the Christmas break for further specialist consultation. That appointment, initially scheduled for January 7, was delayed by a day due to adverse weather conditions.
After further evaluation, doctors confirmed surgery was unavoidable and would require an extended recovery period.
Werder Bremen have now confirmed that Boniface will undergo surgery in the coming days, effectively ruling him out for the rest of the season.
The club did not provide a specific recovery timeline but indicated that rehabilitation would stretch beyond the current campaign.
The development is a major setback for both club and country, with Boniface expected to miss the rest of the domestic season and any international engagements during that period.
The focus now shifts to a full recovery ahead of the following campaign, as the striker begins a lengthy rehabilitation process aimed at returning him to peak condition.
