Former Ekiti State Governor, Ayodele Fayose, has declared that the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has lost its status as Nigeria’s leading opposition party, blaming internal divisions for its decline.
Speaking in an interview with Arise News on Monday, Fayose argued that the PDP’s troubles stem from its own weaknesses rather than the dominance of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC). “You must be very honest. When you are weak, tendencies are there for you to fall to the right of the stronger side,” he said.
He dismissed claims that President Bola Tinubu was responsible for the PDP’s woes, remarking: “The challenges in the PDP, it’s not the fault of Asiwaju, the president. No. The failure in my home – God forbid – is not the fault of my neighbour.”
Fayose described the PDP as a fractured party, saying: “The issues are very clear. The PDP is a house that is divided against itself.”
Turning to the broader opposition landscape, Fayose highlighted the African Democratic Congress (ADC), which he said has gained relevance following former Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi’s reported defection. “Are we saying ADC is not dominant? Recently, Obi moved there. And I’ve said it. Obi is the only life in ADC,” he noted.
When reminded that other figures such as Atiku Abubakar are also linked to the platform, Fayose dismissed their influence: “I’m not saying they are not human beings, I’m saying they are largely spent forces.”
He emphasized Obi’s unique political weight, insisting: “Obi is the only traction. Obi is the only meaning, Obi is the only factor, Obi is the only person in ADC that matters.”
Fayose concluded that Obi’s presence alone has shifted the party’s relevance, warning that without properly supporting him, the ADC could undermine its own prospects: “Even if you don’t feed Obi, if ADC fails to feed Obi, their case will be worse than their coming together.”
