The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has dismissed claims that the party is being positioned to serve the presidential ambition of former Vice President Atiku Abubakar.
Speaking on Channels Television’s Politics Today on Friday, ADC National Publicity Secretary Bolaji Abdullahi stressed that the party does not belong to any single person. He rejected suggestions of an automatic presidential ticket for Atiku, insisting that the ADC remains open and competitive.
Debate over zoning of the party’s presidential ticket has intensified, with state chairmen urging the leadership to abandon zoning and instead conduct transparent primaries.
The ADC was unveiled in July 2025 by a coalition of prominent politicians seeking to challenge President Bola Tinubu in the 2027 elections. Led by National Chairman David Mark and National Secretary Rauf Aregbesola, the party has been expanding its structures and appeal.
Several high-profile politicians have since joined, including Rotimi Amaechi, Atiku Abubakar, and Peter Obi, with more aspirants expected to declare interest soon.
Abdullahi dismissed the notion that the ADC is an “Atiku machinery,” describing it as misinformation spread by the ruling APC. “Every ADC member knows our party does not belong to anybody. That’s why Peter Obi is here, that’s why Rotimi Amaechi is here,” he said.
He added that the ruling party was attempting to second-guess ADC’s activities. “If Atiku gets the ticket, he gets it. If someone else gets it, they get it. But today, this ADC does not belong to anybody,” Abdullahi stated.
The spokesperson highlighted the ADC’s rapid growth, describing it as one of the fastest in Nigeria’s political history. He argued that the party has become the most viable alternative to defeat the APC in the 2027 elections.
