The Ijaw National Congress (INC), the umbrella socio-cultural body of the Ijaw people in the Niger Delta, has urged the All Progressives Congress (APC) to shield Rivers State Governor Siminalayi Fubara from impeachment.
INC President, Prof. Benjamin Okaba, speaking in Port Harcourt over the weekend, cautioned that the ongoing impeachment proceedings against Fubara and his deputy, Prof. Ngozi Odu, would be interpreted as “a clear betrayal of the Ijaw Nation” if allowed to succeed. He described the move as politically motivated and a vendetta.
“APC has a responsibility to defend Sim Fubara. But if Fubara is eventually impeached, then we will see this as a clear betrayal of the Ijaw nation,” Okaba stated.
He also criticised four lawmakers, Sylvanus Nwankwo, Peter Abbey, Barile Nwakoh, and Emilia Amadi, who initially called for a political resolution but later aligned with colleagues pushing for impeachment. Okaba condemned their “lack of integrity”, alleging they were being pressured into supporting the process.
According to him, the impeachment attempt reflects the dangers of excessive godfatherism and undermines democratic principles. “This attitude shows that the Assembly is made up of people who don’t have principle. Their goal is to actualize the interest of an individual, which could be destructive to our democracy, peace, and unity,” he said.
Okaba insisted the impeachment effort was “fruitless” but warned that the INC would take decisive action if Fubara is removed from office.
