A Magistrate Court in Sagamu, Ogun State, has granted bail to Adeniyi Kayode, the driver involved in the tragic road accident that resulted in the deaths of two key members of former world heavyweight boxing champion Anthony Joshua’s team.
The presiding Magistrate, Olufunilayo Somefun, admitted the 46-year-old defendant to bail in the sum of ₦5 million with two sureties. Following the ruling, the court adjourned the proceedings until February 25, 2026, to allow for further legal developments.
Kayode was originally arraigned on January 2 on a four-count charge. The prosecution alleges that his actions on the road led to the deaths of Joshua’s personal trainer, Latif Ayodele, and his strength and conditioning coach, Sina Ghami.
The charges include:
– Dangerous driving causing death.
– Reckless and negligent driving.
– Driving without due care and attention resulting in bodily harm and property damage.
– Driving without a valid national driver’s licence.
During the session, the prosecution counsel, Nijiwe Richard, requested a pause in the trial. He applied for an adjournment to enable the prosecution to transmit the case file to the Ogun State Attorney General’s office through the Department of Public Prosecutions for legal advice, stating this was “in the interest of justice.”
Although the defence counsel, Abiodun Olalekan, opposed the delay and insisted they were ready for trial, Magistrate Somefun upheld the prosecution’s request.
The fatal incident occurred on December 29, 2025, on the Lagos–Ibadan Motorway. The Lexus SUV driven by Kayode—carrying Anthony Joshua and his two aides—collided with a stationary truck. While Joshua and Kayode escaped with minor injuries, the crash was fatal for Ghami and Ayodele.
Following the accident, Joshua was treated and discharged from the hospital. Before the bodies of his colleagues were repatriated to the United Kingdom, the boxer visited a funeral home in Lagos with his mother to pay his final respects.
The boxing world remains in shock over the loss of Sina Ghami and Latif Ayodele, both of whom were foundational figures in Joshua’s career. A funeral prayer service for the deceased was held on January 4, 2026, at the London Central Mosque following the arrival of their remains in the UK.
