The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has urged Nigerians to ignore a false report circulating online that claims the Commission has released the timetable for the 2027 general elections.
In a statement issued Tuesday via its social media handles, INEC described the article as “fabricated” and stressed that it has not published any official timetable, schedule of activities, or election dates. “Any document or report claiming otherwise is speculative and without official basis. They do not represent the plans or position of INEC,” the Commission said.
INEC advised citizens, political parties, civil society groups, and stakeholders to rely only on verified sources such as its official website (inecnigeria.org), social media accounts (@inecnigeria on X, Facebook, and Instagram), and press statements for authentic updates.
“The general public is strongly advised to ignore this misleading report. INEC will make official announcements regarding the 2027 General Elections through the proper channels at the appropriate time,” the statement added.
This clarification follows a similar denial issued on January 3, when INEC debunked earlier claims of a released timetable.
INEC’s Chief Press Secretary, Adedayo Oketola, reiterated that the Commission operates strictly within the law, citing Section 28(1) of the Electoral Act, 2022, which requires INEC to publish a notice of election no later than 360 days before the date fixed for a general election.
