The Ijebu Ode Local Government in Ogun State has ordered an immediate suspension of the ongoing process to select a new Awujale of Ijebuland.
Chairman Dare Alebiosun issued the directive to the Fusengbuwa Ruling House and the Awujale kingmakers following petitions, security reports, and complaints alleging irregularities and inducement in the exercise.
The decision, conveyed in a letter dated January 20, 2026, and signed by the council secretary, Oke Adebanjo, cited provisions of the Obas and Chiefs Law of Ogun State, 2021, which empowers government to halt appointments deemed harmful to peace, order, and good governance.
“Government has had due regard to the provisions of the Obas and Chiefs Law of Ogun State, 2021, which empower it to set aside an appointment if the Executive Council is satisfied that it is in the interest of peace, order and good government to do so,” the letter stated.
The council explained that the move was proactive, aimed at preventing a breakdown of peace and safeguarding the sanctity of the Ijebu traditional institution.
Consequently, the kingmakers were directed to stop the selection process and await further instructions. The letter, however, did not disclose the specific details of the petitions or security reports that triggered the suspension.
This development comes amid heightened interest in the succession to the Awujale stool, one of the most revered traditional institutions in Yorubaland.
