The Lagos State House of Assembly has stopped the demolition of buildings in Makoko and other communities in the Yaba area of the state.

The House ordered the immediate stoppage of the demolition at the end of a meeting with representatives of the affected communities at the Assembly Complex, Ikeja, on Tuesday.

The exercise, which commenced in December last year, has elicited mixed reactions, with many, including human rights groups, condemning the move by the state government to displace the residents.

Following the development, the House set up an ad hoc committee to look into the matter and come up with resolutions acceptable to all parties.

The Chairman of the committee, Noheem Adams, announced the decision to journalists at the end of the meeting.

He said: “All demolitions in Makoko and its waterfront communities should be stopped with immediate effect until further notice.

“Also, any task force to be constituted must involve the residents and carry them along.”
