Former Governor of Benue State and ex-Senator, Gabriel Suswam, has formally resigned from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), citing deep-seated internal crises and a lack of cohesion within the opposition party.
His resignation was conveyed in a letter dated Wednesday, February 4, 2026, addressed to the PDP Chairman in Mbagber Council Ward, Logo Local Government Area, and later shared on Facebook by his Chief of Staff, Moses Ukeyima.
In the letter, Suswam expressed gratitude to the PDP for providing him with a platform to serve Nigeria in various capacities, including as a member of the House of Representatives, governor, and senator.
However, he lamented that the party, once a symbol of unity and internal democracy, had become mired in unresolved disputes over leadership, structure, discipline, and ideology.
“The party that once stood as a symbol of cohesion, internal democracy, and progressive opposition has, regrettably, become plagued by persistent and unresolved internal conflicts,” Suswam wrote.
He added that despite repeated reconciliation efforts, the PDP remained trapped in “a cycle of crisis, with no clear pathway to stability.”
Explaining his decision, Suswam said he could no longer reconcile his membership with his personal convictions and desire to contribute meaningfully to nation-building through a stable political platform.
“Political parties must serve as platforms for ideas, discipline, and constructive engagement, not arenas of endless internal warfare,” he noted.
While stepping aside, Suswam expressed hope that the PDP would eventually find the courage and consensus to resolve its internal contradictions. As of the time of reporting, the party’s leadership had not issued any official response to his resignation.
