The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has confirmed that preparations for the 2027 general election are on course, notwithstanding delays surrounding the passage of the amended Electoral Act by the National Assembly.

The Commission disclosed that it has concluded work on the election timetable and the detailed schedule of activities ahead of the next general polls.

INEC Chairman, Prof. Joash Amupitan, made this known on Wednesday in Abuja during an engagement with Civil Society Organisations (CSOs).

While briefing stakeholders, Amupitan explained that although INEC has already forwarded its recommendations and inputs to the National Assembly, the eventual timing of the lawmakers’ passage of the amended Electoral Act could still affect certain components of the electoral calendar.

He acknowledged that some activities captured in the timetable may need adjustments depending on when the new legal framework is enacted.

However, the INEC chairman stressed that until the amended law is passed, the Commission is proceeding strictly in line with the existing Electoral Act, noting that INEC has no alternative but to plan and operate within the current legal provisions.

The assurance comes amid growing public interest and stakeholder scrutiny over the readiness of electoral institutions as Nigeria moves closer to the 2027 general election cycle.
