The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), has announced Mohammed Kasim, the candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), winner of the of the Gwagwalada Area Council chairmanship election held on Saturday in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).
INEC’s Returning Officer for the FCT, Philip Akpen who made the announcement on Sunday morning, said Kasim polled a total of 22,165 votes to defeat his closest rival, Yahaya Shehu of the All Progressives Congress (APC), who came second with 17,788 votes.
Describing the election in the council as peaceful, smooth, free and fair, Akpen declared:
“I am the returning officer for the 2026 FCT Area Council, Gwagwalada chairmanship held on February 21, 2026.
“That Mohammed Kasim of PDP, having certified the requirements of the law, is hereby declared the winner and is returned elected.”
Giving a further breakdown of the chairmanship election results in the council Akpen said that number of registered voters stood at 207,577 while accredited voters were 46,294.
The released results showed as follows:
A: 151; ADP: 128; APC: 17,788; APGA: 1,687; APM: 24; NNPP: 175; PDP: 22,165; SDP: 432 and YPP: 158, with the total valid votes at 43,960 while the rejected votes were 1,521.
