The Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) has dismissed as false recent rumors about the introduction of a ₦5,000 note featuring President Bola Tinubu.
The apex bank also dismissed claims that Polaris Bank is undergoing liquidation.
The apex bank clarified that both reports are fake while urging Nigerians to rely only on official communications.
Earlier on Thursday, viral images of a supposed ₦5,000 banknote featuring President Tinubu circulated widely on social media.
Reacting to it, CBN confirmed the image is digitally fabricated and stamped it “FAKE” on its official X (Twitter) handle.
The bank reiterated that no such denomination has been introduced.
On the Polaris Bank liquidation rumor, a claim surfaced online alleging that Polaris Bank was being liquidated for failing to meet recapitalisation deadlines.
The rumour was peddled by an X user @Femzydr1, alleging billionaire Razaq Okoya’s bid to buy the bank amid failed recapitalisation efforts, but CBN and Polaris Bank have debunked the report urging Nigerians to ignore the misinformation.
“Polaris Bank is currently undergoing a liquidation process for not being able to comply with the Central Bank of Nigeria Recapitalization requirements, and the bank will be put under NDIC to be liquidated.
“The bank license might also be revoked Soon, But Billionaire Razaq Okoya has made a bid to purchase the Bank, & reinstate it, so as to comply with the CBN requirement.

Reacting to the post, CBN shared a screenshot labelled” Fake Content” and wrote:
“This content is fake. Let the public be guided. The Nigerian Banking System is Safe and Secure.”
The apex bank went on to advise Nigerians to rely solely on official CBN statements for updates on currency and banking matters.
