A member of the Lagos State House of Assembly, Hon. Dipo Olorunrinu, has been indicted in a case of unlawful possession of guns.
The member of the Peoples Democratic Party was indicted by two suspects who were arrested by operatives of the Inspector General of Police X-Squad in Lagos State for unlawful possession of guns.
A statement by the spokesman of the Lagos State Police Command, Chief Superintendent of Police Chike Oti, said the arrest of the two suspects, Wale Oye and Ganiyu Ajiboluwa, followed the expiration of the grace period given by the Inspector General of Police, Ibrahim Idris, for those in possession of arms and ammunition to hand them over to the authorities.
Oye, 37, and Ajiboluwa, 47, were arrested on July 12, 2018 at about 5:45pm by a team of operatives of the Inspector General of Police X-Squad on patrol at Festac Extension by Apple Junction, Amuwo Odofin, Lagos State.
A single barrel Mossverg Pump action rifle with identification number B/NO D512429, one Zirve Magnum Pump action rifle with number B/NO 45639 and two live cartridges were recovered from the suspects.
During interrogation, the suspects claimed the guns were given to them by Olorunrinu, 47, for them to escort him to a political rally.
Olorunrinu was arrested and admitted ownership of the guns.
To further prove that the weapons are his, he produced expired licences dated 2015 and 2016.
Oti said he, however, could not justify his refusal to surrender the guns during the window period offered by IGP Idris in the last nationwide mop up of illegal firearms and ammunition.
Oti added: “Investigation is in progress and further findings on the matter will be communicated to the general public as usual.
“The Commissioner of Police Lagos State, CP Edgal Imohimi assures that the Command will soon rid the state of illegal and prohibited firearms as the taskforce constituted for that purpose will soon embark on house to house search for illicit guns.”
