GOD knows that I am perennially worried with the ugly state of our electricity in the country.
Despite billions if not trillions of Naira spent on this sector from 1999 till date, not much has been added to the national grid in terms of Megawatts.
A colleague of mine once told a lie to a lady lawyer friend in US about the state of power in Nigeria.
The lady lawyer gave a statistics of what a State generates as megawatts and harmlessly asked my colleague what our country generates and he lied that it was 6000 megawatts and a follow up question was what is your population and my friend answered that we are 180 million citizens.
My friend said that the lady lawyer nearly fainted. Guess her next question, don’t you have any single factory in your country?
The recent collapse of the power system in Nigeria should give Nigerians cause to get really worried.
This is the ninth collapse in this year alone as reported in the papers. The various Discos have nothing to supply, in fact it was reported that Abuja Disco had zero supply within the week, this is really serious.
To compound the problem, I have read where The Current Minister of Power, Works and Housing Mr BABATUNDE RAJI FASHIOLA has said that with the state of privatization of the previous government of the power sector that there is nothing the present government can do with improving the system.
I know that one of the major promises President Buhari made when he was campaigning for power in 2014 was to turn our power sector around. Is this promise still standing ?
I am worried because the power seems not to be improving.
The recent report is that the megawatts have dropped from 4000 to about 2000 megawatts.
This state of event has brought complete darkness to homes and offices, crippling economic activities and sending Nigerians to Petrol stations for diesel and fuels. Generators are packing up and trust me, the generators sellers and engineers are smiling to the banks.
WHEN ARE WE GOING TO END THIS VICIOUS CIRCLE?
Last month Ikeja Disco sent me estimated bill of 57,000 Naira for supplying darkness to my office.
I cried out for prepaid meter which I have applied for over 5 years now.
They just installed one two days ago, but the crazy bill of 57,000 is yet to be resolved.
Without resolving it, I can not purchase any unit for the newly installed prepaid meter. You see my problem?
THE REAL ISSUE AND QUESTION IS HAVE WE LOST FINALLY THE POWER TO CORRECT THE POWER SYSTEM PROBLEM IN NIGERIA FOR EVER, AND THAT WE WILL REMAIN LIKE THIS UNTIL JESUS COMES?
