In what can only be described as a novel move never before seen in Nigeria’s political scene, the National Working Committee (NWC) of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has issued expulsion certificates to the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, former Fovernor, Ayo Fayose and others who were recently expelled from the party.
The members had been expelled at the party’s last national convention held in Ibadan, Oyo State.
The party formally expelled the 11 high-profile members, in what party leaders described as a decisive step to restore discipline and strengthen its ranks ahead of the 2027 general elections
The announcement was made Tuesday at a press briefing following a meeting of the National Working Committee (NWC) in Abuja.
National Chairman Kabiru Turaki, SAN, said the decision revealed the party’s determination to end internal sabotage and enforce discipline.
He explained that expulsion certificates had already been dispatched via courier to the affected politicians, among them Senator Samuel Anyanwu, Umaru Bature, Kamarudeen Ajibade (SAN), Abdurahman Muhammad, Senator Mao Ohuabunwa, Austin Nwachukwu, Abraham Amah Nnanna, George Turna, and Dan Orbih.
“They have been expelled. They remain expelled. We have now certified their expulsion, and these certificates have been sent to them,” Turaki declared.
He added that institutions including INEC, the police, DSS, and NSCDC had been formally notified.
Turaki warned that disclaimers would soon be issued to the public, cautioning that anyone conducting business with the expelled members in the name of the PDP would do so at their own risk.
The chairman confirmed that the NWC had reviewed and approved congresses in Osun State to select ad hoc delegates. He also affirmed that the Osun governorship primary was proceeding smoothly, stressing that Governor Ademola Adeleke remained a PDP member and aspirant despite reports of a resignation letter circulating online.
“As I speak to you now, primaries are ongoing… Governor Adeleke’s name is one of the aspirants vying for the ticket,” Turaki said, noting that no official resignation had been received.
He reiterated that the PDP’s strength lies not in individual officeholders but in the loyalty of its grassroots base. “Our power, our strength, is not in who are members of the National Assembly or who are the governors of our party. It is in the people, and that is why the PDP is the people’s party,” he said.
Turaki also addressed reports concerning former governors Okezie Ikpeazu and Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi, recently nominated for ambassadorial positions, clarifying that the party had not received formal communication from them.
In his remarks, Turaki delivered a sharp critique of national security under the APC-led government, calling for a complete overhaul of Nigeria’s security architecture.
“Nigerians are not safe on the streets, in their workplaces, on the farms, in the markets or in their homes. Every citizen lives and walks in perpetual fear. That must change,” he said.
He argued that governors should not be labelled chief security officers when they lack operational control over security agencies.
The chairman further confirmed that the NWC had examined ongoing legal disputes, including cases challenging the closure of PDP offices at Legacy House and Wadata Plaza, expressing confidence in the party’s legal standing.
Turaki said the new NWC had begun reviewing handover notes from the outgoing executives to ensure continuity and avoid administrative lapses. He expressed confidence in the PDP’s readiness to present itself as a credible alternative in the next election cycle.
“We are now prepared to be saddled with the responsibility of performing our functions as the leading opposition party in Nigeria,” he concluded.
