The Defence Headquarters (DHQ) has confirmed that the recent collaborative air campaign between Nigerian and United States military forces targeting ISIS elements in North-West Nigeria was fully sanctioned by the Federal Government.
The announcement was made on Friday by the Director of Defence Information (DDI), Major General Samaila Uba. In an official release, titled “Armed Forces of Nigeria in Conjunction with the United States Conducts Precision Strikes Against Foreign ISIS Elements in North-West Nigeria,” Uba clarified that the high-level operation was a key component of a broader strategy to neutralize criminal networks and safeguard national security.
According to the DDI, the strikes were the result of meticulous planning and “credible intelligence.” The primary objective of the mission was to significantly weaken the operational reach of the terrorists while prioritizing the safety of nearby communities to minimize collateral damage.
The joint mission serves as a clear signal of the Federal Government’s determination to work alongside strategic global partners to combat transnational terrorism. By striking these specific ISIS cells, the military aims to prevent foreign insurgents from establishing a permanent presence or expanding their influence within Nigerian borders.
Major General Uba emphasized that the Armed Forces would continue to pursue and support international and inter-agency collaborations to ensure long-term stability.
“The Armed Forces of Nigeria reiterates its unwavering commitment to protecting lives and property and to supporting joint and inter-agency efforts aimed at restoring lasting peace and security across all parts of the country,” the statement concluded.
