Former Labour Party vice-presidential candidate Yusuf Datti Baba-Ahmed has renewed his call for a generational shift in Nigeria’s political leadership, stressing that the country urgently needs new leaders to tackle its challenges.
Speaking on Channels Television on Friday, Datti reflected on his long political journey alongside former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, noting that Atiku has been a presidential aspirant since his own National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) days.
“When I was doing my NYSC, Baba Atiku was already an aspirant. In 2018, we contested primaries together. In 2023, we faced off again. And now, in 2027, once more?” he said.
Datti argued that Nigeria must embrace a new generation of leaders, pointing out that many capable Nigerians are discouraged by the country’s political system.
“There is need for a new generation of Nigerian leaders, and they do exist. A whole new generation is waiting for credible leadership to guide them into a new party,” he said.
He criticised the political structure as expensive, treacherous, and dominated by godfathers, which he said prevents competent individuals from participating meaningfully.
“There are good Nigerians capable of solving the nation’s problems, but they are discouraged by a system full of bad promises and entrenched interests,” he added.
