The Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) generated a record ₦7.281tn in revenue in 2025, exceeding its annual target.
The Comptroller-General of Customs, Bashir Adeniyi, disclosed this on Monday in Abuja during the 2026 World Customs Day celebration.
Adeniyi said the figure surpassed the approved revenue target of about ₦6.5tn by ₦697bn, representing a positive variance of over 10 per cent.
He added that the 2025 revenue also reflects a 19 per cent increase compared to the ₦6.1tn collected in 2024.
According to him, the improved performance was driven by reforms, better use of technology, improved data management and enhanced stakeholder engagement, rather than aggressive enforcement.
“We present these figures not as self-congratulation, but as evidence that reform is yielding tangible outcomes,” Adeniyi said.
He stressed that the revenue growth was achieved without stifling legitimate trade, noting that the Service balanced revenue generation with its trade facilitation mandate under regional and global agreements.
Despite the gains, Adeniyi acknowledged persistent bottlenecks at Nigeria’s ports.
He said delays were driven less by Customs processes and more by structural constraints across the port system, stressing that faster cargo movement would require joint action by Customs, port authorities and maritime operators.
“Our challenge is that we cannot move goods fast, it is that goods are not allowed to move fast.”
Border security and procedural reforms, he added, remained the quickest way to protect society while facilitating trade.
