The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) on Thursday revised the timetable for the 2027 general elections, moving the presidential and National Assembly polls to January 16, 2027, while governorship and state assembly elections will now hold on February 6, 2027.
In a statement issued by National Commissioner and Chairman of Information and Voter Education, Mohammed Haruna, INEC explained that the adjustment was necessary following the repeal of the Electoral Act 2022 and the enactment of the Electoral Act 2026, which introduced new statutory timelines for pre-election and electoral activities.
“The commission has reviewed and realigned the schedule to ensure full compliance with the new legal framework,” the statement read.
- Party primaries (and resolution of disputes): April 23 – May 30, 2026.Presidential and National Assembly campaigns: August 19, 2026.
- Governorship and state assembly campaigns: September 9, 2026.
- Campaigns must end 24 hours before election day, with INEC warning of strict enforcement.
The commission also announced a slight adjustment to the Osun State governorship election, moving it from August 8 to August 15, 2026. It noted that while some activities for the Ekiti and Osun polls had already been conducted, remaining processes would align with the new law.
INEC emphasized that the revised dates comply with the 1999 Constitution (as amended) and the Electoral Act 2026, urging stakeholders to cooperate in ensuring peaceful, credible, and inclusive elections.
“The successful conduct of the forthcoming elections remains a collective responsibility,” it stated.
