Trump sparks outrage after sharing post proposing ‘Strait of Trump’

U.S. President Donald Trump has ignited fresh controversy after amplifying a proposal to rename the Strait of Hormuz as the “Strait of Trump,” by resharing a post featuring the idea on his Truth Social platform on Wednesday.

The post included a map depicting the critical maritime corridor with the altered name, drawing widespread attention due to the Strait’s strategic importance to global energy supply.

Linking the Persian Gulf to the Gulf of Oman, the narrow channel remains one of the world’s most vital oil transit routes, with a significant share of daily crude exports passing through it.

Although the suggestion appears symbolic, its timing has raised eyebrows amid escalating geopolitical tensions between the United States and Iran. The Strait has historically been a focal point in disputes between both countries, particularly over sanctions, maritime security, and navigation rights.

Trump’s action also mirrors earlier comments in which he floated the idea of renaming the waterway—remarks that have largely been interpreted as provocative rather than indicative of formal policy.

Despite the attention it has generated, any attempt to unilaterally rename an international waterway such as the Strait of Hormuz would hold no legal standing, as such designations are governed by international conventions and longstanding global consensus.

However, the development has coincided with renewed anxiety in global oil markets. Prices climbed sharply as concerns mounted over possible disruptions to supply, with Brent crude reaching its highest level in years amid uncertainty surrounding the region.

According to a report by *The Economic Times*, oil prices rose on Thursday as fears intensified over a prolonged U.S. blockade on Iranian exports and stalled nuclear negotiations, both of which have heightened concerns about tightening global supply.

Brent crude surged to levels not seen since mid-2022, as ongoing tensions linked to the Iran situation continued to threaten stability along the Strait.

The spike followed an Axios report indicating that Trump had rejected Iran’s proposal to reopen the Strait, suggesting that restrictions could remain in place until broader nuclear negotiations are resolved.
