President Bola Tinubu has expressed his condolences to the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), its affiliate unions and the legal profession over the death of the Congress’ General Secretary, Comrade Emmanuel Ugboaja.
President Tinubu described Ugboaja as a strong voice for the workers’ movement whose contributions to constructive engagement with government and employers would be remembered.
In a statement, the President said the late labour leader devoted his professional life to advancing the rights, welfare and dignity of workers.
“Comrade Ugboaja, who died on Thursday, devoted his professional life to advancing the rights, welfare and dignity of workers.
“As a veteran trade unionist and legal practitioner, he brought to the labour movement a rare combination of legal knowledge, strategic insight, administrative competence and an unwavering commitment to justice,” Tinubu said.
The President said that as NLC General Secretary, Ugboaja carried enormous responsibilities, coordinating the affairs of the labour movement and providing strategic direction for its operations and affiliate unions at critical moments.
He noted that the late labour leader also played a central role in negotiations between the government, employers and organised labour, where his legal training, experience and understanding of industrial relations proved invaluable.
“He helped to forge a common purpose among workers and their representatives,” the President added.
Tinubu prayed to God Almighty to comfort Ugboaja’s family, the labour community and all those mourning his death.
He urged them to take solace in the fact that the deceased lived a life of meaningful service.
