SuperSport viewers on DStv and GOtv enjoyed another great weekend of football action, with the continuation of the 2019/20 Premier League, La Liga and Serie A campaigns.
With the English Premier League reduced to just three matches this past weekend – due to a split round and weather cancelling the Manchester City v West Ham United clash – the only Africans in action were Jordan Ayew, Wilfried Zaha and Chekhou Kouyate in Crystal Palace’s 3-1 loss away to Everton.
In La Liga, the only African scorer was Youssef En-Nesyri for Sevilla in their 2-1 defeat away to Celta Vigo, though there were several notable performances from the continent’s players.
This includes more fine work from defenders Djene Dakonam and Allan Nyom, as Getafe claimed a 3-0 home win over Valencia to take a stranglehold on third place on the log, while Aissa Mandi put in a manful display for Real Betis in their thrilling 3-2 loss at home to Barcelona on Sunday night.
Elsewhere in La Liga, Thomas Partey helped Atletico Madrid return to winning form with a 1-0 triumph over Granada, while Salisu Abdul Karim was a key figure for real Valladolid in their 1-1 draw at home to Villarreal.
The top-performing African in Italy’s Serie A this past weekend was Gambian winger Musa Barrow, who scored two goals as Bologna claimed a shock 3-2 win at Stadio Olimpico over Roma on Friday night. The on-loan Atalanta player netted in the 26th and 51st minutes to help the Rossoblu down the Giallorossi.
Elsewhere, Sofyan Amrabat helped Hellas Verona claim a stunning 2-1 win over Juventus on Saturday, which opened the door for Internazionale to leapfrog to the top of the table with a 4-2 win in the derby against Milan on Sunday night.
Nigerian Victor Moses made a substitute appearance for the Nerazzurri and provided an assist for Romelu Lukaku’s goal which wrapped up the scoring, while the Rossoneri featured Franck Kessie (who provided an assist for a goal by Zlatan Ibrahimovic) and Ismael Bennacer.
Jeremi Boga also continued his fine form for Sassuolo with a late winning goal in their 2-1 triumph away to SPAL.
