The Federal Government has declared Wednesday, May 27, and Thursday, May 28, 2026, as public holidays in commemoration of this year’s Eid-el-Kabir festivities.
The announcement was made by the Minister of Interior, Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, through a statement released on Monday by the Permanent Secretary of the ministry, Magdalene Ajani.
According to the statement, the holiday declaration underscores the government’s recognition of the religious significance of the Islamic festival and its importance to millions of Muslims in Nigeria and across the world.
Tunji-Ojo congratulated Muslim faithful both within the country and in the diaspora, describing Eid-ul-Adha as a sacred occasion centred on sacrifice, obedience, faith and compassion.
He urged Nigerians to use the period to pray for national peace, unity and continued progress.
“The Federal Government urges all Nigerians to use this period for prayer and sober reflection, asking for divine guidance upon the country as it continues its pursuit of peace, security, and prosperity for every citizen,” the statement read.
The minister also encouraged citizens to uphold the values of peaceful coexistence, mutual understanding and national unity during the celebration.
The Federal Government further wished Muslims across Nigeria a peaceful, joyous and spiritually fulfilling Eid-ul-Adha celebration.
