Guaranty Trust Holding Company Plc (GTCO) has announced the 2026 edition of its #BeatTheDistance initiative, a nationwide social impact programme that will provide 3,000 bicycles to schoolchildren in underserved communities across six Nigerian states to improve access to education.

The initiative, now in its second edition, will benefit pupils in Ebonyi, Jigawa, Benue, Oyo, Akwa Ibom and Ekiti States, helping to ease the burden of long and often difficult journeys to school.

Building on the success of its inaugural rollout in 2019, the programme reflects GTCO’s continued commitment to promoting educational access through practical interventions that address the everyday challenges faced by children in rural and underserved communities.

The bicycles are intended to reduce the transportation difficulties experienced by students who travel long distances to attend school, with the goal of improving school attendance, enhancing learning outcomes and enabling more children to pursue their education with greater comfort and confidence.

Commenting on the initiative, the Group Chief Executive Officer of Guaranty Trust Holding Company Plc, Mr. Segun Agbaje, described education as a powerful catalyst for social and economic transformation.

“Education remains one of the most powerful tools for transforming lives and creating opportunities. Through the **#BeatTheDistance** initiative, we are supporting students whose determination to learn is often tested by the distance they travel each day to access education.

“By providing these bicycles, our goal is to reduce fatigue, improve school attendance and create an environment where more children can realise their full potential through better learning outcomes,” he said.

Agbaje added that the initiative reflects GTCO’s broader philosophy of addressing real community needs through sustainable and impactful interventions.

“At GTCO, we believe meaningful impact comes from addressing real challenges within communities. #BeatTheDistance is one of the ways we are investing in the future by supporting young people and creating conditions that enable them to succeed.

“We remain committed to initiatives that promote inclusion, expand access to opportunities and contribute to sustainable development,” he added.

The #BeatTheDistance programme forms part of GTCO’s wider corporate social responsibility strategy, which focuses on education, youth empowerment and community development.

By significantly reducing the time students spend commuting, the initiative enables beneficiaries to devote more time and energy to learning, while encouraging consistent school attendance and improving their overall educational experience.
